ILRI

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and conducts research to help reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries.  The IGAD LPI has its offices at the ILRI campus in Addis Ababa and thus collaborates closely in many of its areas of implementation. General agreed areas of interaction include: a) strengthening capacity in national and regional organizations; b) elucidating livestock’s role in poverty alleviation – influencing policy makers through instruments such as PRSPs; c) equivalence and harmonization of legislation and regulations to enhance both quality and safety of livestock inputs and products and market access for the poor; and d) support to the changing roles and responsibilities of livestock service providers.
The strengthening of veterinary services in the IGAD region must be put in development process contexts. A specific area of collaboration between ILRI and IGAD LPI is working towards service support to animal health constraints in the IGAD region, with a focus on the demands of poor livestock keepers in terms of reducing their vulnerability to shocks, and of promoting market access for livestock and livestock products.
