AU-IBAR

The African Union’s Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) was involved early in the inception of the IGAD LPI when, in 2001, IGAD and IBAR conceived a concept paper for a project that would: a) support the formulation of national livestock development policies; b) harmonise livestock policies at regional level; c) enhance livestock trade in the region; and d) support grassroots organizations – issues that are now all dealt with quite explicitly by the IGAD LPI. This original concept paper provided the foundations on which the current regional livestock policy initiative is based. Under contract to the PPLPI, IBAR conducted a series of preparatory national stakeholder consultations and workshops in some IGAD member states. Since the initiative’s inception the role of IBAR has moved more from implementation to coordination, in particular via the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), of which IGAD is one. IBAR sits on the Steering Committee of the IGAD LPI and collaborates directly through some of its projects, such as the “Pastoral Policy Initiative”, to which IGAD LPI contributes, and more generally through its involvement in other programmes such as PAAT and PAATEC, LEGS and ALive.
